Description
Indications:
Pregabalin (Lyrica) is used to treat moderate to severe pain, caused by nerve damage due to high sugar levels (diabetes), shingles infection, or spinal cord injury. The capsule is also indicated in the treatment of fibromyalgia and certain types of seizures.
Mechanism of Action:
Pregabalin belongs to a class of drugs known as ‘anticonvulsants’ which works by calming the damaged or overactive nerves in your body that may cause pain or seizures. Pregabalin is a structural derivative of the GABA but, it does not directly bind to GABA receptors instead it binds to the alpha2-delta part of voltage-gated calcium channels in the CNS tissues. The modulation in the voltage-gated calcium channels will result in the reduction of neurotransmitters. Thus, it causes pain relief.
