Description
Indications:
It is used as an antiepileptic drug (for the treating seizures). It is also given to people with anxiety disorders. This drug is a CNS depressant and can induce sleep, that’s why it is used for insomnia associated with anxiety disorders.
Mechanism of Action:
It is known from literature that when a nerve cell is hyperpolarized, it stops producing action potential, thereby decreasing the propagation of impulses accross neuron. Rivotril achieves this state by binding to BZ subunit of GABAA receptors. This association potentiates the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. As a result, the frequency of opening of chloride channels increases and causes the cell to hyperpolarize.
